Big West Day3

Wow! The word would summarize the evening of the third night at the Big West Championships for the Gauchos. Starting with the 400 IM, one of our exhibition swimmer, Jon Garvey, swam the bonus heat with the time of 3:56.67 which would put him in the 4th place in the final heat. This guy can swim the 400 IM the way you exactly need to do. In the 100 butterfly, we were gaining points especially in the finals. Going into the 200 freestyle, we had 5 men and 5 women in the finals. It was almost like doing a get-out swim at UCSB Campus Pool. All they needed to do was to push each other like they do in practice. Courtney Bauer and Matt Bartlett ended up winning while Liz Wagner and Scott Vogelgesang got second. The men went 1-2-3 while women had a 1-2 finish. Our rookie, freshman Dan Morris (aka: DMO) finished strong going as fast as Bartlett in the last 50. I can honestly say that DMO's sprint workouts helped him to pull that fast 50 at the end. (j/k) Moving into the 100 breaststroke, if anyone besides Katy's mom knew that this was coming, you have the power to predict the future. Katy stormed to the finish and clocked 1:00!!! She was FAST! The Guachos also won the men's 100 breast with the strong 25 by Jeff Sudbury. In the 100 backstroke, we had strong showings by Jessica Cruzat, Naomi Javanifard, Katy Freeman, Bradley Matsumoto, and Curtis Bauer while our seniors Ben Malmolm and Bobbie Wilson had one of their best swims in their 4 years as a Gaucho.

In the last event of the night, the 200 free relay, the Gauchos were going for qualifying the relays for the NCAA's. We ended up going a little slower than we planned, but they both broke the school records. Tomorrow is a new day and it's the best day of the meet for the Gauchos. Almost everyone has their best event on Saturday, so ... watch out!

As the evening was very exciting, I didn't video tape the races, so no posting ... sorry:(
